Who is Vaastu Purush ?

Vaastu Purush is said to be the lord of any house, building or structure residential or commercial and mental, physical as well as economic wellbeing of the owner and occupants solely depend upon his blessings. Vaastu Purush is present in each and every plot whether it is big or small. He has a fixed and peculiar body. His head remains hanging down and his body is spread all over the length and breadth of the ground. There is an interesting story in the MatsyaPuran in which the birth of VaastuPurusha is narrated. By reading that story one knows why the worship of the VaastuPurusha is necessary before beginning the construction of any building.


Long long ago Lord Shiva fought against the demon named ‘Andhaka’ and killed him. While fighting with demon, Shiva was very much tired and began to sweat profusely. A man was born of the drops of Shiva’s sweat. He looked very cruel. He was very hungry. So he began to make penance to appease Lord Shiva and get a boon from him. Shiva was pleased with his penance and appeared before him.The devotee prayed to Shiva,”Oh Lord! Please permit me to eat away all the three worlds.” Shiva said,” Let it be so.” The devotee’s joy knew no bounds. He got possession on all the three worlds and first he was ready to eat the terrestrial world (Bhooloka). Then the celestial (Devatas), Brahma, Shiva and the demons (Rakshasas) also were terrified and caught hold of the devotee encircling him.

VaastuPurusha, being arrested like this, said to the Gods, “Oh, Celestial Beings! You have all caught hold of me and tied me on all the sides. How long shall I be like this, in this position hanging my head down like a prisoner? What shall I eat? Listening to those words, the celestial beings said, “Today is BhadrapadaShuklaTritiya Saturday and ‘Vishakha Star’; So you lie down here on the ground changing your position once in three months, i.e. from ‘Bhadrapada’ to ‘Kartik’ you lie down putting your head in the Eastern direction and your feet towards the West. During the months of “Margashirsha”, ‘Pausha’ and ‘Magha’, you lie down towards the South looking towards the West and put your feet towards the North during the months of ‘Phalgun’, ‘Chaitra’ and ‘Vaishakh’ put your head towards the West and feet towards the East., looking towards the North; in the months of ‘Jyestha’, ‘Ashadha’ and ‘Shravana’, put your head towards the East. North and the feet towards the South & look towards the East. Whatever side you may turn, you will have to lie down on the left side only. You will be known as ‘VaastuPurusha’. You will tease the people, to your heart’s content, who construct buildings and temples, dig wells and tanks on the side towards which you see and in the direction towards which you hold your feet. You may trouble and even devour those people who construct the aforesaid buildings and temples etc. In the direction where you lay your head and back and those who lay foundation-stone without worshipping you or without satisfying you with “Homa” and the like. Then the Vaastu-Purusha was quite satisfied. Since then the worship of Vaastu-Purusha has been in vogue and it has become compulsory for those who want to construct any kind of building.


The presiding deity of Vaastu is called VaastuPurusha. While laying the foundation stone for a new building or while entering a new building, Vaastu Puja and VaastuHoma are performed as prescribed by our scriptures to propitiate the VaastuPurusha and to ward off the evil aspects. I invite the attention of the readers to Canto 56 of the Ayodhyakanda and Canto 15 of the Aranyakanda of the Ramayana. In the first reference Sri Rama mentions to Lakshmana the efficacy of Vaastu and Vaastu Puja as follows :

कर्तव्यंवास्तुशमन्म्सौमित्रे  चिरजिविभि:|

which means, ‘this Vaastu Puja has to be done by those who wish to live long’. In his commentary on this passage, MaheshaTirthastates :

वास्तुशब्देनगृहाधीष्ठिताशिखिपर्जन्य प्रभर्तिपॅंचचत्वारिशदेवताउच्यन्ते |तासां  शमन्म्होमनैवेदबलिभि: पूजानंबोधायनेनोक्तम  |  

By the Vaastu is meant the forty five deities starting with Agni, Parjanya etc., who occupy the house. Sage Bodhayana has given in the Grihyasutras the procedure to propitiate these deities with Havana, offerings, etc.’ this has to be done by everyone while entering the new house to have a long and happy life.

If one takes the initiative and pains to delve deep into our age old texts, he will find clear cut instructions for keeping the idols of different gods in the Puja in different directions. Even in Panchayatana Puja the idols of the five gods Aditya, Ambika, Vishnu, Ganapati and Shiva have to be kept in a particular order placing them in different directions. When we do the Puja of Sri Satyanarayana Swami, we place the Grahas, Dikpalas and others in different places. All these indicate that each direction (dik) is controlled by one invisible power called Dikpala.

This power is like electricity which is not visible to the naked eye. Electricity can only be seen through a light, fan or any other appliance. If one does not have the required apparatus, this electricity energy cannot be experienced. Similarly, to experience this divine invisible power one has to be thorough with this subject and must possess the power of concentration. Without these prerequisites, one will definitely not be able to understand or experience the efficacy of this Shastra. It is not proper to advise with half baked knowledge, which, in the long run, will prove dangerous to all concerned. Of late, we find some people trying to interpret this science with their own logic. By mere chance some of their versions may come out correct. But unless it is supported by the authority of the Shastra, it cannot be confirmed as right.

Vaastu and Astrology are the two divine sciences with the help of which one can plan to have a peaceful and happy life. These two sciences deal with invisible forces which make one’s life happy or otherwise. Let the persons practising these two sciences exercise proper care while giving predictions or advising their clients about their future. They should also be conversant with the remedial measures as detailed in our traditional scriptures.

The difference between astrology and Vaastu is that astrology gives general direction of one’s life. It defines one’s weakness, tendencies and strength, which one can try to overcome by improving oneself and minimise the weakness through efforts. It gives some solace to one in difficult circumstances.

By using the principles of Vaastu one can definitely, within a reasonable span, improve one’s financial stability and also relationship with the outer world. Once you make the necessary and requisite changes in your house or workplace, other things automatically follow.
